genesis - our journey I

the genesis of this team began around valentine's day of 2009. inspired by the teams that were established years before, Sek Khai made plans to establish a team and join the ranks.

he took a glance at the futsal field, upon seeing the many individuals scurrying about playing, Sek Khai decided to create a team. he met with Kamarul and they both agreed to create a team.

it was at first your average sunday-league team, nothing special or worth mentioning. after a while, everyone decided that the team should be made official. plans were drew up to establish this team.

a fine day at class, the teacher was lazy and gave the class a free period. Sek Khai started on his first plan : the team's name. the words that would be put on everyone's jersey, the name that would be cemented on the many cups and trophies we shall obtain.

skimming through a dictionary word by word, he couldn't find the perfect word. when he almost gave up, he found the most suiting word : "Genesis ; a beginning".

Sek Khai went around and told his teammates of his finding. everyone unanimously agreed to use it as the team name, after finding out its meaning.

the next thing on the list, The Crest.

there were so many suggestions, too many actually. no one could choose the right one that wasn't going to be considered as plagiarism. the first few attempts looked like Manchester City's, Liverpool's and many others.

what all these teams had in common were the bird. it soon became the main part of the crest. the border, the wordings were perfect. the bird was the only problem.

stork, pigeon, flamingo, nothing worked. even an inverted twitter bird was suggested once. ultimately we chose to use a gold phoenix, wing's spread eagle as the crest.

the crest was done, all that's left are the jerseys.

batu bersurat, batu satu, even kota batu were all visited in order to find the Genesis kit. Sek Khai finally chose Imperiall as the manufacturer.

the initial pricing for the kits were rather steep, $30+ then Adib remembered something. his father, who works at MinDef could get a generous discount from the people at Imperiall as they also had their jerseys made there.

the price went down to $25, which is better since its half of what most of us could get in a month.

bit by bit, the money was collected until enough could be used to pay up front.

excitement, euphoria and anticipation filled the air as we received our jerseys; dark blue, adidas stripes on the sides with our name and numbers beautifully placed at the back.

earning respect was the milestone for this team. we were mocked and ridiculed at first. it was our very own rite of passage to be recognised as a team.

everyone knew the only way to get over all the ridicule and rants were to prove them wrong. the many matches we played against : Outsyders, PPB, UIC, Vilareds, STG, we managed to give them a challenge and prove to them we weren't just a team. we finally earned the respect and recognisation of our seniors.

the team we respect the most would be Vilareds. we sit together at the canteen and are almost like brothers. we share our knowledge and help each other improve with the many times we've played together.
